Tugboat Enterprises Ltd.

About Me

Jonathan LysterMy life has been entertaining and eventful to say the least. Of late I am Chief Technology Officer with Tugboat Enterprises Ltd., a software company located in the wilds of west-coast British Columbia. We are currently in the process of bringing out our product line, which begins with Lifeboat, a utility for rescuing data from a failed computer.

Aside from the black art of making computers dance and sing, my work has run the gamut from freelance journalism to ad copywriting to desktop publishing and Web site design. I've written short fiction, including a short story called "The Hunter of the Guileless," which was nominated for the Arthur Ellis Award for Crime Fiction in 1999; that story saw publication in Storyteller magazine. At this time I've had one book in print, The Opera 5.x Book: Browsing the Web with Speed and Style, a guide to the Opera Web browser.

For three years I served as editor-in-chief and publisher of RIM magazine, a small-press magazine devoted to supporting writers and artists on the west coast.

My freelance work has appeared in the Vancouver Sun, the Powell River Peak, and Writer's Journal. My short fiction has appeared in Storyteller, On Spec, and Challenging Destiny.

A freelance writer for over 10 years, I've designed Web sites (including the layout for this one), and I've written numerous newspaper and magazine articles covering such subjects as bicycling, writers' groups, and Generation X.

My work has including desktop publishing--I developed the guidebook to the Powell River Logger Sports--and advertising. I have developed advertisements for such companies as Husqvarna, Weyerhauser, and Wajax.

Visit my resume pages for a more complete history of my work.

The Wayback Machine
August 5, 2006
A fascinating tool for seeing what a particular web site looked like in the past. Wind the Wayback Machine to CNN on September 11, 2001 to see what the news coverage of that fateful day looked like - minute by minute and hour by hour.
Canadian Music Creators' Coalition
April 29, 2006
The CMCC is a new organization of Canadian musicians and songwriters whose members believe suing their fans (as the Recording Industry Association of America loves to do) is a colossally stupid idea.

Science fiction writer Robert Sawyer's well-crafted web site, with plenty of information for the fan and the aspiring writer.

The source for information about the science fiction and fantasy publishing field.
Atom Films
November 1, 2005
Devoted to to short film - the longest I've seen thus far runs about 30 minutes, and most are much shorter. These are professional-level films, often made by major directors or studios. Some of the flicks you'll find here border on brilliant.

Devoted to query letters received by a Hollywood agent. If you think the dreck coming out of Hollywood is the worst of the worst, check out this site and read what gets rejected.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the SCO vs. IBM case (SCO claims to own Linux; they don't, and they're busily losing their various court cases).
